Terms of Service
Last updated: June 14, 2026
Using Public Lands Map (outpostmaps.com) means agreeing to these terms.
The service
Public Lands Map is a free, informational map of public-land ownership, management, and legally designated roads. An optional free account lets you save private places (campsites, water, hazards, and GPS tracks).
Informational only — not legal authority
This is the heart of the terms. The map is a rule-of-thumb, not a legal determination. A land color reflects the managing agency and the camping practice generally associated with it; it is never a guarantee that camping, motorized access, or any other activity is permitted at a given spot. Boundaries, seasonal closures, and local rules change. Verify current regulations, closures, and private-property boundaries with the managing agency before acting. Map data is drawn from public datasets (PAD-US, USFS MVUM, BLM, US Census, and similar), each with its own date and limitations — the existence of a road on the map is not permission to drive it.
Your account
You are responsible for activity under your account, and for saving only content you have the right to save. The service may not be used to break the law, to harm or disrupt the service, or to infringe the rights of others.
Your GPS tracks and content
You own the tracks you record. The service stores them only to provide the recording feature — to save your Activity, show it back to you, and let you export or delete it. Your tracks are private to your account. The map remains an informational rule-of-thumb, never a legal authority, no matter where a recorded track leads; verify access and local rules with the managing agency.
Availability and no warranty
The service is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability. Outdoor activity carries inherent risk; you are responsible for your own safety and decisions in the field.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Public Lands Map and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from reliance on the map's information or from use of the service.
Data attribution and licensing
The map is built from open data, credited here as each source's license requires:
- Basemap geometry (roads, water, places) is © OpenStreetMap contributors, licensed under the Open Database License (ODbL).
- Basemap tiles are served via OpenFreeMap (OpenStreetMap data).
- The map is rendered with MapLibre GL, an open-source library under the BSD 3-Clause license.
- Public-land ownership and management polygons come from PAD-US (U.S. Geological Survey), which is in the public domain.
- Optional satellite imagery is Esri World Imagery (© Esri, Maxar, Earthstar Geographics, and the GIS user community), shown only while the satellite layer is enabled.
Changes and termination
These terms may change; continued use means acceptance of the updated terms. Features may change or be discontinued at any time.
